Simply put, the key elements of the Healthy Soils approach are:
- Balanced mineralisation leads to healthy soils structure, biology and plants.
- Healthy soils produce more mineral dense plants which in turn are more nutritious for livestock (require less) and human consumption.
- Better nutrition leads to stronger plants and animals with increased performance and better disease resistance.
- Healthy soils have better moisture retention and at the same time are able to cope with excess water.
- Fertilisers are able to be held in the soil profile in a stable and plant available state for longer, with less leaching to the water table or gassing off to the atmosphere.
- We are able to use less product for more effective results.
- The growth of weed species is suppressed (weeds are an indicator of poor soil condition)
Healthy Soils Limited is
a Dunedin based Company.
We look at the balance or ratios of both the micro and macro nutrients. With an understanding of the ways these minerals interact with one another, we can “conduct” these to provide optimal growing opportunities.
Once we address the mineral balance of the soil and we have the nutrients flowing, the next essential part is to balance the biology of the soil. We use tools to balance the invisible helpers in the soil: the protozoans, bacteria and fungi that “mine” the minerals and convert them to plant-available nutrients. The ratios of these organisms are both an indication of what is happening in the soil and an important part of striving for the best possible quality of pastures or crops, and the ongoing productivity of our farming systems.
